A Vision on Wheels: Reflecting on Our Stained Glass Bus Project

Not every dream reaches the road, but some are too inspiring not to share. In 2017, we set out to design and fund an ambitious project: a tour bus covered in stunning stained glass, reimagined as a mobile stage and studio. We worked with Karl Unasch, an extraordinary media artist from SE Minnesota. While this concept didn't secure the grant funding it needed, its purpose and passion still resonate deeply.

The stained glass bus was conceived to be more than a vehicle. It was a vision for unity—bringing together rural and urban communities through pop-up events, live performances, and creative programming. With its fold-out stage and flexible interior design, it would have been a space for storytelling, music, and connection, all while broadcasting hope and creativity.

Why stained glass? Because it captures light and transforms it into something beautiful—just as art can take our differences and create something that unites us. Designed in a rural studio, the bus aimed to reflect both local pride and shared humanity, featuring Minnesota-inspired imagery and bold, welcoming colors.

While this chapter of the project has ended, the spirit behind it continues. We are committed to finding ways to bridge divides, celebrate art, and connect communities with the Sketches of Minnesota project we’re doing with the Minnesota Humanities Center.

Though the stained glass bus won’t hit the road, the lessons learned and the inspiration it sparked will guide us as we move forward.

If you’re interested dreaming up a big project like this, reach out to us and tell us about it!
